Sanity.com.au Site Launch

by Scott King on Aug.06, 2009, under CSS, Design, Flash, JavaScript

Today we rolled out the new version of the Sanity Australia web site. Several months of blood, sweat and late nights went into this one. It’s a major e-commerce site built for Australias biggest music and dvd retailer. I was responsible for the front-end development and .NET integration.

Site Preview: Crust Pizza

by Scott King on Aug.04, 2009, under ActionScript, CSS, Design, Flash

A preview of the new Crust site featuring quite a cool Carousel I created from pre-rendered FLV video. I did a version of this Carousel in Papervision 3D but decided to run with a 3D pre-rendered version as the level of interactivity didnt require a full PV3D application.

The Carousel uses 2 small FLVs, one for the scrolling and one for the box opening. I simply loop part of the scrolling video to allow the boxes to slide multiple times and reverse the videos for animating the slide in the opposite direction or to close the box lids. I then load the Pizza PNG itself under a dynamic mask on top of the FLV along with the Pizza information from an XML web service. Video rendering by Jonathan Miranda.

ActionScript 3, Tweenlite, Bulkloader.

Cool effect. Check it out at:

My Ad runs in the Sun Herald, chosen by group of panelists

by Scott King on Jun.15, 2009, under Design

The Sun Herald asked my work to come up with a 1/4 page advertisement to “re-brand and re-market” Australia. We literally only had a few hours, and I spent perhaps 30minutes on my few ideas. It was reworked by one of our creatives and the finished product was selected by a panel of judges as a finalist. Here is the ad as it appeared in the Sun Herald.

Some other ideas that didnt make the cut, these are rough concepts by no means polished executions:

Fairfax Domain Presenter

by Scott King on May.03, 2009, under ActionScript, Design, Flash, Widgets

This was a major project developed for Fairfax Digital as a part of their Domain Real Estate brand. Fairfax required a system that allowed their Sales people to create a fully customised, interactive Slide Presentation, similar in function to a high quality Powerpoint Presentation that they could install on their Laptops and take on the road with them to client pitches. The presentations had to facilitate the download of live content and XML feeds form the web but also have an offline mode.

The solution was to build a system featuring a web-based CMS for configuring the custom Presentations that were then compiled into a Windows Desktop application. The presentation and individual slides can also be customised with personalised content allowing a user to add and remove Slides, Slide Categories, upload images, logos and branding and add custom formatted text and content. The customised Presentation could be viewed online or can be packaged up as a Windows Application and delivered to the user for download. The Windows version can then be run from the users Desktop and viewed offline at anytime.

To achieve a smooth transition from online application to offline application I built the interface level in Flash, driven by ActionScript 3 and fed all of the content, images and customisations in via XML. I then built the offline version of the interface and packaged it into a Windows app with MDM Zinc. I used network monitoring to detect if a user is online or offline, if the user is online the XML is fed directly from online Web Services. If it is offline it looks in it’s package config.xml.

Technologies:

  • Flash
  • ActionScript
  • XML
  • MDM Zinc

by Scott King on Mar.04, 2009, under CSS, Design, SEO

With all the development work I don’t get much time to design these days, but for Budget Greenslips I decided to break out the Stylus and updated the design to a more modern, web 2.0(ish) design. I then rebuilt the site using strict CSS and xHTML, re-optimised for maximum SEO.

Skins – True Spirit of Competition

by Scott King on Jan.18, 2009, under ActionScript, Design, Flash, Papervision

This is another site to utilise extensive use of Papervision, This was a fun site with a great design, originally designed as a media portal site to YouTube it grew into a full social blog type web site where users can register and add their own comments about a particular video.

The pièce de résistance for me is the Papervision, I did several concepts for the 3D interface and I was happy when the client decided to run with this particular version.

Technologies:

  • Flash
  • ActionScript3
  • Papervision Alpha 2
  • CSS / xHTML
